The San Bernardino ZIP that touches Loma Linda, and the ones beyond it

Emergency dispatch for San Bernardino runs around the clock from Loma Linda. The city had 222,101 residents in the 2020 Census, and its center is about 7 miles northwest of our base by straight line. A licensed plumber takes every call, and you hear a clear price before work starts.

ZIP 92408 is the one San Bernardino ZIP listed as adjacent to Loma Linda, which makes it the closest part of the city to us. The headquarters of the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department, or SBMWD, is at 1350 South E Street in 92408. Water or sewer trouble that starts in the street is that department's to handle.

Verdemont and Muscoy: the northwest side in ZIP 92407

ZIP 92407 is our primary San Bernardino ZIP. USPS lists Muscoy and Verdemont as acceptable place names for it, though the city itself does not confirm those as neighborhoods. SBMWD's 2025 water quality report does name the Verdemont area as a growth area.

The utility's project list includes a Verdemont 2300 Pressure Zone East job with a storage tank, a booster station and a transmission pipeline. If pressure changes on your street while that kind of work is going on, call SBMWD about it before you assume the problem is in your house.

ZIPs 92410 and 92404 are also on our service list. We leave their streets unnamed rather than name places we have not confirmed.

Check which water district serves your street

Most of the city is served by SBMWD, which covers about 45 square miles and roughly 200,000 people. East Valley Water District says it serves certain parts of San Bernardino as well, and it does not name the neighborhoods. No street-level boundary is available to us.

Look at your water bill or call the number on it. The provider decides whom you call about a main break, a meter issue or a water quality notice. For a leak between the meter and your house, the answer is simple: leak detection on your side is the job of a plumber, whichever district is on the bill.

Water at 242 mg/L: what groundwater in San Bernardino leaves behind

SBMWD's 2025 report says its supply is 100 percent groundwater from the Bunker Hill Groundwater Basin, drawn from more than 40 wells. State Water Project water is not piped in. It is spread in ponds to recharge the basin.

Hardness averaged 242.2 mg/L as calcium carbonate, with a range of 130 to 330 mg/L, and the report calls it naturally occurring. That figure is for SBMWD groundwater only. Scale on faucet aerators and inside tanks is a realistic worry, so water heater repair here includes a look for sediment. Test your tap, since a water softener only makes sense when the numbers back it up.

Disinfection is by chlorine, not chloramine, with a distribution average of 0.74 mg/L.

The lateral rule has more reach than most owners expect. SBMWD says the owner is responsible for the whole lateral, including the part under the sidewalk, the curb and the street, and the repair is at the owner's expense. The utility suggests an inspection every five to ten years and a cleanout if the pipe has none.

That is why camera work matters here. A sewer line repair that reaches into the right-of-way needs a permit, so ask the city's Community Development office at (909) 384-7272 before digging. For a backup into the fixtures, SBMWD asks you to phone rather than report online.

A sewer system that also handles Loma Linda

SBMWD operates 467 miles of sewer mains, a job that moved to it from city Public Works on 1 May 2017. Its Water Reclamation Plant began operating in 1973 and gives primary and secondary treatment. The effluent goes to the RIX facility that San Bernardino shares with Colton.

Loma Linda's wastewater is treated at that same plant under a joint powers agreement, so a drain in our home city and a drain in San Bernardino end up in the same place. A backup that hits several buildings on a street is likely a city matter, and one that hits only your building is probably yours.

Permits, meters and roadwork

San Bernardino's Building and Safety Division says plumbing work generally requires a permit, and single-family water repipes can be applied for by email to the permit technician on its page. The permit counter is at 201 North E Street, and the City Information Center in the Vanir Tower, 290 North D Street, can be reached at (909) 998-2000.

Since 8 October 2025, SBMWD has been rolling out smart water meters to reduce water loss. If your reading jumps after a meter change, call SBMWD about the meter and a plumber about the pipe. Closing every tap and watching whether the dial still turns separates the two.

SBMWD is also working on the SR-66 rehabilitation from Pepper Avenue to H Street and on pipeline replacement along 24th, 25th and 26th Streets and Davidson Avenue. Call 811 at least two business days before any digging near those streets.

24/7 emergency

Before a plumber arrives in San Bernardino

Call (909) 505-3225 and a licensed plumber answers 24/7. Same-day appointments are offered when available, including nights and weekends. Start with these four steps.

Shut off the main valve

Find the shutoff on your side of the meter and turn it clockwise. If the leak is in the street, SBMWD's emergency line is (909) 384-5141.

Kill power near water

Keep clear of wet outlets and appliances. Switch off the panel only if the floor under you is dry.

Clear the area and move valuables

Pull belongings away from pooling water. After a sewer backup, keep children and pets out and avoid touching the water.

Call the 24/7 line

Tell us your ZIP, the cross street and what you see. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or 1-800-427-2200 before anyone.
